The AED board of directors is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 AED Leadership Awards, presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of eating disorders. Our distinguished 2010 award recipients, listed below, will be presented with their awards at the 2010 Awards Ceremony, at the AED 2010 Salzburg International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED).

AED 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award
For pioneering lifetime contributions to the field of eating disorders and to the Academy for Eating Disorders in the areas of treatment, research, education, and administration.

A graduate of the University of London in 1966, Bob completed his psychiatric training primarily at St George's Hospital Medical School where he developed his interest in eating disorders through his work with the late Arthur Crisp. In the following forty years Bob has been involved in innovative research, clinical practice, education, and administration in the field of eating disorders. His current research activities include a study of mortality of nearly 2000 patients that will serve as a pilot project for a multi-centre study. In addition, the deficiencies of the present eating disorder classification system have been the focus of Bob's recent thinking and research. One of the foremost scholarly thinkers in our field, Bob has led the way in pursuing an integrative understanding of eating disorders. The author of numerous research and clinical articles, Bob has written three books and edited two others. His contributions to the AED and to the field earned Bob the 2005 AED Leadership Award for Clinical, Educational and Administrative Service. In 2005 he also received the Eating Disorders Association (now Beat) National Award (U.K.) and in 2008 was invited to deliver the annual James Mitchell Lecture for the Eating Disorders Research Society. Still active in research, writing, and administration, Bob recently retired from clinical practice, after 44 years of providing patient care. The AED is extremely honored to present our distinguished colleague, Bob Palmer, with the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award for the impact his body of work has made in advancing new integrative directions throughout all aspects of the field of eating disorders. Howard Steiger, former AED board member and executive board member, associate editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED) and generous contributor to numerous AED committees and work groups, has been an innovator in eating disorders research, treatment, education and program administration throughout his career. Working at the Douglas Institute's Eating Disorders Program (EDP) since 1986, and as the program's chief since 1990, Howard has contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge regarding causal mechanisms and clinical management of eating disorders. An internationally respected program, the EDP, under Howard's leadership, integrates clinical care, teaching, and research in order to provide treatments based on current scientific knowledge. A sought after speaker and educator, Howard's contributions have advanced the treatment of eating disorders and the quality of patient care worldwide. For his distinguished contributions to our field and to the AED, the AED is honored to present Howard Steiger with the 2010 Leadership Award for Clinical, Educational and Administrative Service.

Mary Tantillo, a former AED board member, is the present chairperson for the AED Credentialing Task Force and co-chairperson for the Patient/Carer Task Force. Mary has worked with patients with eating disorders and their families for over 25 years in a variety of clinical settings. Her outstanding leadership, since 1994, of the AED Credentialing Committee, has brought together a diverse group of professionals, program leaders, legislators, insurance representatives and other key stakeholders that has collaboratively developed basic standards to ensure high quality inpatient and residential treatment of individuals with eating disorders. A staunch advocate of family involvement in treatment, education, and advocacy efforts, with a special interest in Multifamily Therapy Group treatment, Mary recently developed The Healing Connection, LLC, a free-standing partial hospitalization program for adults and adolescents with eating disorders. For her impact in advancing patient rights and access to quality care, the AED is honored to present Mary Tantillo with the 2010 Meehan-Hartley Award for Public Service and Advocacy.

A former AED board member and active contributor to numerous AED committees and work groups, Dianne Neumark-Sztainer's research interests focus mainly on adolescent nutrition and the prevention of weight-related disorders including eating disorders, unhealthy weight control behaviors, and obesity. Her work aims to help young people feel good about themselves and their bodies, and adopt healthy eating and physical activity behaviors as self-nurturing behaviors. She has been Principal Investigator on a number of projects aimed at preventing risk factors for eating disorders and obesity in youth. She is the Principal Investigator of Project EAT-I, II, and III, a cross-sectional and longitudinal study of eating patterns and weight-related concerns in a large sample of adolescents and the Principal Investigator of Project F-EAT (Families and Eating and Activity in Teens). She has examined disordered eating among youth with chronic illness as part of the AHEAD study (Assessing Health and Eating among Adolescents with Diabetes) and has examined issues of weight stigmatization among overweight teens. The author of "'I'm, like, SO, fat!': Helping your teen make healthy choices about eating and exercise in a weight-obsessed world," Dianne has also written several book chapters and has published over 250 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. For advancing new knowledge about eating disorders, furthering our understanding of the etiology of eating disorders and for fostering new research and treatment directions, the AED is honored to present Dianne Neumark-Sztainer with the 2010 AED Leadership Award in Research.
