The 2010 AED Scholarship Campaign
The goal of the 2010 AED Scholarship Campaign is to raise funds to
provide training and education in eating disorders treatment, research,
and prevention for the (i) Clinician
Scholarships and the (ii) Student/ Early Career
Investigator Travel Fellowship. Scholarship recipients are provided
with support to attend the AED International Conference and gain
knowledge to improve the quality of eating disorders care, research,
policy and prevention in their communities around the world.
The 2010 AED Scholarship Campaign is essential to AED's mission to promote excellence in research, treatment and prevention of eating disorders and to provide education, training and a forum for collaboration and professional dialogue.
This past year the members of AED pulled together to propel the 2008 AED Scholarship Campaign to success. The campaign was successful on several levels--we fully funded four research and four clinical scholarships, as was our goal; we had more than 90 contributions from all parts of our membership, with excellent participation from the AED board, the past AED presidents and many of the fellows; and there were several corporate gifts and one matching gift from a foundation contacted by one of our fellows.
The contributions to these scholarships fund colleagues from around the globe who might not otherwise have the resources to attend the ICED. As a result, these colleagues enrich their home communities and our professional community. In all, the success of this campaign reflects the ongoing commitment of the AED membership to encourage and support diversity in our membership.
Gifts to this fund will enable the AED to continue to develop its worldwide advocacy efforts. Some of the programs currently sponsored include:
- Charter for
Action on Eating Disorders: The Charter outlines
the treatment rights and expectations of people with eating disorders
and the families and loved ones who care for them. This important
document has been signed by treaters and carers from around the globe
and is used to drive advocacy efforts aimed at improving the quality and
accessibility of treatment for individuals with eating disorders.
- AED Global Think Tank: The AED Global
Think Tank is an annual meeting held at the AED International Conference
on Eating Disorders that draws delegates from around the globe to
address ways to improve eating disorders treatment, education,
prevention, and research.
- AED Patient/Carer Task Force: This AED
task force is comprised of representatives from patient/carer
organizations from around the world. Its purpose is to develop
educational programs and activist initiatives that address the needs and
interests of people with eating disorders and their families and loved
ones who care for them.
- Political Action: The AED collaborates
with regional eating disorder organizations to lobby for measures to
improve the quality and accessibility of eating disorders treatment and
research.
Gifts to the AED's general fund allow us the greatest flexibility in program development and outreach. Funds are used for programs designed to:
- Promote the effective treatment and care of patients with eating disorders and associated disorders
- Develop and advance initiatives for the prevention of eating disorders
- Disseminate knowledge regarding eating disorders to members of the Academy, other professionals and the general public
- Stimulate and support research in the field
- Promote multidisciplinary expertise within the Academy's membership
- Assist in the development of guidelines for training, practice and professional conduct within the field
- Identify and reward outstanding achievement and service in the
field
Student
Research Grants
AED Student Research
Grants
The AED Student Research Grants support innovative and cutting-edge
research conducted by student members of the AED. These grants can be
used to support any aspect of a student research project, including (but
not limited to) participant payments, support staff salaries, and costs
related to study assessments and/or database management. These awards
serve the dual purpose of enhancing the training of our student members
and advancing the science in our field by funding the most innovative
and promising research.
TJ's Fund for Eating Disorders
Research
TJ's Fund for Eating Disorders Research is named in honor of Thomas Lee
Warschefsky, II. TJ battled anorexia nervosa for eight years and was in
a residential treatment program three different times. TJ was an honor
student at Okemos High School in East Lansing, MI, USA and graduated cum
laude from Albion College in Albion, MI, USA. He was a high school
scholar athlete and a cross country and tennis walk-on at Albion
College. He was also in the U.S. Air Force Medical Professionals program
and a first year dental student at Marquette University in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, USA. In addition to these accomplishments, TJ had a great
sense of humor, was extremely kind and sensitive, and very loved by
everyone. Despite his many strengths, TJ succumbed to anorexia nervosa
and passed away on Valentine's Day in 2007 at the age of 22.
Throughout TJ's battle with anorexia nervosa, his family discovered that little was known about its causes or effective treatments. TJ's family developed TJ's Fund to promote a search for a cure through research grants related to the biological cause and/or treatment of eating disorders. Biological research has made great strides in understanding the development and treatment of other serious forms of mental illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. TJ's Fund is dedicated to making similar discoveries in the biological bases and treatment of eating disorders and improving the lives of its sufferers.
