Sociedad Transdisciplinaria de Obesidad (STO)

Sister Organization since January 2010

The STO was established in Argentina to improve the quality of life of people suffering from obesity and eating disorders. We aim to promote healthy life habits and fight against the obesity epidemic and eating disorders by facilitating research, academic activities, and an exchange of information between different sectors of society.

An important part of our mission is to help create a friendlier and healthier environment for people with obesity and eating disorders. We like to think of our organization as a “big umbrella” under which different areas related to obesity and eating disorders come together. These include health, economics, education, pharmaceutics, food industries, public health, physical activity, urban transportation and design, and communication. We believe that integration of this kind is the key to a better future for the field of eating disorders and obesity.

Eating Disorder Association of Canada (EDAC)

Sister Organization since February 2010

The Eating Disorders Association of Canada/Association des Troubles Alimentaires du Canada (EDAC/ATAC) is a Canadian organization of professionals in the field of eating disorders and related areas. The mandate of EDAC/ATAC is to best serve the needs of those whose lives are impacted by eating disorders. Central to this mandate are the following objectives: to educate each other regarding best practices; to encourage sharing of information amongst EDAC/ATAC members about all issues of eating disorders care; to promote a reflective and responsive approach in the provision of care and amongst providers; and to stimulate and support research in the field of eating disorders.

The association took shape in 2006 when a group of eating disorder professionals from across Canada began a dialogue to establish a national body that would unite those interested in eating disorders from across the broad geography of Canada. A steering group was formed and an inaugural meeting was held in Calgary, Alberta in February 2008. Later that year EDAC-ATAC was incorporated with headquarters in Toronto, Ontario. Three Directors were named from the steering group, Drs Leora Pinhas (President), Eric Vicker (Treasurer) and David Pilon (Director-at-large). By-laws were drafted articulating the structure, governance, membership, nomination and election process, meetings, committees, sections, finances and dissolution of the association.  Elections for the unfilled members of the Board will take place at the second meeting to be held in Toronto in November 2010.  The Board will consist of: the President; immediate Past-President; President-Elect; Secretary-Treasurer; one to two Directors-at-large.

In addition to the Calgary and Toronto meetings, EDAC/ATAC has concentrated efforts on identifying member benefits and services, the production of a national newsletter (EDAC News & Views), and the construction of an association website (http://edac-atac.ca/).  Preliminary research has explored the feasibility of publishing a scholarly journal.

Canada´s expanse is immense (the worlds second largest country) and its population small (34,000,000).  Such a context lends challenges for a specialty association of professionals but also provides the motivation to connect those clinicians and programs from around the country.  There are less than 30 specialized eating disorder programs across the country, with the vast majority being part of our public health care system.  We expect to have representation from each of those programs among our membership.  Each issue of EDAC News & Views features one of the countries treatment programs.

The membership of EDAC-ATAC looks forward to our affiliation with the Academy of Eating Disorders and to the mutual growth of our associations and of the field of eating disorders promotion, treatment and research.

Sociedad Chilena para los Estudios de los Trastornos Alimentarious (SETA)

SETA aims to support research in the field, to foster the interchange of knowledge and information among professionals and to disseminate information generated at the local and international levels, with the ultimate aim of contributing to the wellbeing of the community.

To attain these objectives, SETA periodically organizes scientific meetings and encourages the publication of its members' research projects, supports members interested in developing specific areas for the study or treatment of eating disorders, strives to improve teaching in the field at all levels and develops formal relationships with other scientific or professional societies and promotes an exchange of information. Finally, SETA supports governmental initiatives and provides scientific advice when required.

SETA is a young interdisciplinary society whose members include representatives of most eating disorders institutions in Chile. It has launched campaigns to recruit new members.
