AED Update
December 2005

Scott Crow, MD, FAED
AED President

Several important things are happening within the Academy that I would like to draw your attention to. First, as you have heard the AED Board has been in the process of reorganizing the role of the Board functions. The ultimate effects of this reorganization will be to streamline Academy function and speed our response to all sorts of issues by engaging Board members more in specified parts of the Academy’s daily function. Board members will each take on a portfolio in one of a number of areas (including education and training; electronic media; print media; public affairs; or membership). This transition process is underway and will be complete by the meeting next June in Barcelona.

This has been a busy fall filled with Academy-supported educational events, including the HLA SIG teaching day in Monterrey, Mexico; the Athlete’s SIG meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA; and the Bariatric Surgery SIG/Medical Care SIG teaching day held in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA. Congratulations to all on these three successful sessions and thanks to the organizers of each of these events for their outstanding work.

The online membership renewal system is now up and running. Please take the time to visit that part of the Web site to renew your dues now.

Compilation of Eating Disorders Review, Part II is nearing completion. Copies will be sent in early 2006 to AED members who order advance copies. We are offering the Review at 50% of the non-member rate, so be sure to include your order when you renew your membership.

Finally, I would note that it is only seven months until we hold the International Conference on Eating Disorders in Barcelona, Spain. Abstract submissions closed in November, and we received 575 proposals. As shown by the volume of submissions and level of interest, this will be our best conference yet.
