AED Update
March 2005

Michael J. Devlin, MD, FAED
AED President

Fellow AED members:
February and March have been busy months for the Academy. As we begin to make our final approach to Montreal, I'd like to share with you some of what's been going on. And remember, if you have comments or suggestions, or if you have an item for the next edition, please feel free to e-mail me at mjd5@columbia.edu.

AED Annual Review:
You should have received your first AED Annual Review, entitled Eating Disorders Review, Part 1. I hope you are finding it as stimulating and useful as I am finding it. And Steve Wonderlich PhD, FAED, Jim Mitchell, MD, FAED, Martina de Zwaan, MD, and Howard Steiger, PhD, FAED are hard at work on Part 2, which will summarize the literature on a complementary set of topics. We have already received a number of terrific suggestions, including the idea of setting aside a section of the book to review non-English language eating disorders literature. Please let me or the editors know your additional comments, suggestions, and ideas.

International Journal of Eating Disorders:
As many of you are aware, our journal has undergone a number of improvements lately, including, most recently, a new online submission and review system. But the journal also has a new look. Congratulations and thanks to Editor Michael Strober, PhD, FAED and Associate Editors Cindy Bulik, PhD, FAED, Ruth Striegel-Moore, PhD, FAED, and Tim Walsh, MD, FAED for the appealing new design.

AED Newsletter:
Beginning with the next newsletter, we will be introducing a new feature spotlighting the Academy's fellows, including their particular interests, contributions, and thoughts about AED. In this way, Fellowship Committee Chair Marsha Marcus, PhD, FAED, in collaboration with newsletter Editor Debbie Franko, PhD, hopes to highlight some of the many ways in which our fellows have embraced AED's mission, and foster connections among fellows and members who share particular interests and goals.

International Conference on Eating Disorders in Montreal, Quebec, Canadato be held April 27-30, 2005. The AED Annual Meeting information is available on the web site and features the 2005 Preliminary Program, and Exhibitors and Supporters information, and registration information at http://www.aedweb.org/conference/index.htm.

Speaking of AED educational programs, AED is collaborating with the Australian and New Zealand AED to co-sponsor a clinical training day on Thursday August 25, 2005 in Sydney Australia, to take place in conjunction with the ANZAED conference. This will be AED's first fully collaborative teaching day, and among the first of what I hope will be many transequatorial educational ventures. And here's another note from down under. Four AED members are featured international presenters at the Bronte Foundation Conference 2005: Looking for Answers in Treatment & Prevention, to take place March 18-19 in Melbourne, Australia. They are: Michael Levine, PhD, FAED, Ovidio Bermudez, MD, FAED, Emmett Bishop, MD, CEDS, and Vicki Berkus, MD, PhD, CEDS. Further information is available at http://www.rch.org.au/ceed/resources.cfm?doc_id=2958.

New AED Website is here:
AED has launched the new website at www.aedweb.org. The site includes a "Members-Only" section featuring the Member Directory, Quick Membership Renewal, Listserv Access, and member contact information update where you may go online anytime to update your contact information or change your password.

AED's Public Affairs Council has also been quite active these days. Thanks to Bryn Austin, ScD, the Academy had the opportunity to contribute to Model Local School Wellness Policies and Physical Activity and Nutrition, developed and endorsed by The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity. The final report will be sent to all primary and secondary schools in the US to advise them on how to improve their nutrition and physical activity policies and programs, and is likely to be read and studied both within and outside the US. Mary Tantillo, PhD, RN, CS, FAED continues to work with the Credentialing Committee to gather information on how organizations across the globe go about establishing standards for treatment centers, and how AED might consider doing the same. And Allan Kaplan, MD, FAED will be representing AED at the upcoming meeting of the NIMH Professional Coalition for Research Progress to discuss the future of eating disorders research. AED is eager to be represented at similar meetings outside the US; please let me know of any such opportunities that exist in your locality.

Online Dues Renewal:
If you would like to renew your AED membership online, visit https://secure-association-payments.net/aed/member_app.cfm to pay via the AED secure Web site. The membership application you see serves as the dues renewal form.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I look forward to seeing you in Montreal.

Mike
