Family Therapy Special Interest Group
The focus of the Family Therapy SIG is to provide a forum for members to discuss clinical and empirical issues related to the use of family therapy with eating disorder patients. In addition, the SIG functions as a source of support, consultation and collaboration for its members by addressing clinical dilemmas, discussing research initiatives, sharing referral and resource information and promoting scholarly presentations at ED conferences. Anyone with an interest in family therapy is encouraged to join us to help determine the ongoing focus and future direction of this SIG.
Future Goals and Planned Activities
- To meet at least annually at AED conferences and meetings
- To maintain between-meeting communication via the AED listserv
- To recruit a co-chair for the Family Therapy SIG
- To encourage group members to provide scholarly presentations describing the use of family therapy at AED and other eating disorders conferences
Past Activities and History
The Family Therapy SIG held its first group session April 28, 2002.
2002 Summary of Activities
The Family Therapy SIG held its first group session on April 28, 2002. Thirteen conference attendees were present at the meeting. Goals for this initial meeting were to define the purpose of this SIG and identify members who were interested in co-chairing. We discussed the Family Therapy SIG as a forum for discussing clinical and empirical issues related to the use of family therapy with eating disorders patients. In addition, the SIG was discussed as a source of support, consultation and collaboration for its members by addressing clinical dilemmas, discussing research initiatives, sharing referral and resource information and encouraging scholarly presentations at eating disorders conferences.
The remainder of the group session was spent engaged in a lively discussion about the effects of inpatient hospitalization on the family and specifically whether inpatient hospitalization has an undermining effect on parental roles. Group members from various countries and treatment settings shared their insights and perspectives on this topic.
The names and e-mail addresses of SIG meeting attendees who are Academy members will be submitted to the Academy business office so that they can be added to the listserv to facilitate communication among group members.
The Family Therapy SIG plans to meet at least yearly at the International Conference and maintain contact throughout the year via the listserv.
