The University of Kansas Center for the Advancement of Research on Eating Behaviors (CARE) is searching for 1-2 post-docs to support clinical trials, assessment, and classification research for people with eating disorders across the life course. Under the supervision of Dr. Kelsie Forbush, the trainee will advance research in the eating-disorders field, including focus on areas such as assessment, classification, treatment development and dissemination, neuroimaging, and community engagement. The trainee will be expected to lead research design in support of the development of new, and implementation of existing, funded research projects, and support grant preparation activities, including building their own line of research. Duties will include serving as an author or co-author on scientific papers and other dissemination products for presentation and publication. Additional duties and responsibilities will involve accruing clinical hours for licensure and supervision of trainees once licensed. Our current research projects include focus in the following areas:

    • Large-scale mobile-health intervention of Guided Self-Help Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT-gsh) for young adults.
    • NIH-funded clinical trial designed to develop a mobile-health app that uses machine learning to predict likelihood of relapse in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.
    • DoD-funded research designed to develop a new screening tool for eating disorders and related mental health conditions in two nationally representative samples of veterans.
    • Community-based research with young adults to develop new assessment and classification tools to better identify eating disorders in school-based populations.
    • Pilot fMRI studies to identify predictors of treatment outcome in adolescents and young adults with an eating disorder.

The CARE Laboratory also has several large existing datasets, including (but not limited to) a longitudinal dataset of over 30,000 patients with eating disorders in collaboration with Recovery Record, Inc. and an ongoing five-wave longitudinal study of over 350 community-recruited adults with eating disorders. Finally, our center has close relationships with numerous local and national eating-disorder treatment centers, including Children's Mercy – Kansas City and Eating Recovery Center, making this an ideal setting for researchers seeking to establish an independent clinical-research career.

The ideal candidate should have a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology and have completed an internship by the start date. Post-docs will be provided with high-quality supervision and expected to seek independent licensure in the second year. Individuals who are currently on internship are welcome to apply. We offer a range of outstanding training opportunities through this position, depending on candidate experiences and interests. KU has a post-doctoral network that provides social support, didactic educational opportunities related to research. Additional training experiences for trainees are offered through the Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Institute, including the KL2 Scholars Program and the TL1 Trainee Programs.

CARE is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive research and educational environment for faculty, staff, and students. In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, we actively encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups in higher education. This position will be hybrid to start with and will transition to fully on-site and will require relocation to Lawrence, Kansas. The University of Kansas is located in suburban Lawrence, a short drive from metropolitan Kansas City, which is the 23rd largest city in the USA, with many urban attractions and activities, including professional sports, shopping, food, museums, theatre, music, and dance.

Please submit an online application, cover letter, vitae and contact information for three professional references. In the cover letter, please indicate how you see your skills and experience contributing to research at CARE. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Application review begins on Feb 21, 2022 and will continue until a qualified applicant pool has been identified.
