Cracking the Code: Strategies for Success in Early Career Grant Writing
February 20, 2019 at 5:00 PM EST
Speakers: Kendra Becker, PhD and Jason Lavender, PhD

Grant-writing is among the primary components important to academic success at each stage of career development. Further, obtaining and effectively executing research grants is a key pathway by which scientific progress is made to advance the understanding and treatment of eating disorders. For this reason, development of grant-writing knowledge and skills is an important area for focus and growth among early career individuals in eating disorders research. However, writing a successful grant is fraught with challenges. It requires specialized knowledge, as well as extensive time and effort, particularly for new investigators. The process is also highly competitive due to the limited funding resources available, especially in the under-funded area of eating disorders research. Despite the steep learning curve and high stakes involved in grant-writing, many students and early career professionals receive little or no formalized training in grant preparation. Accordingly, a recent survey of AED’s Early Career Special Interest Group (SIG) revealed that nearly 75% of members are interested in obtaining additional training in how to write grants, especially career development grants. This presentation, the first of Early Career SIG’s Professional Development Webinar series, is designed to address this unmet need among early career researchers in the eating disorder community. In this webinar, two awardees of federal grants, Dr. Kendra Becker and Dr. Jason Lavender, will provide instruction, advice, and experience related to writing career development grants, with a focus on the U.S. National Institutes of Health mechanisms of F32 and K awards. The goal of this discussion will be to provide concrete tools and exemplars to enhance the potential for funding success among new investigators in the eating disorders field.
