Muscularity Stigma & Its Relevance To Eating Disorder Risks

When:  Nov 19, 2025 from 09:00 to 10:00 (ET)
Muscularity Stigma and Its Relevance to Eating Disorder Risks Among Men and Women | While traditional eating disorder frameworks have primarily focused on the thinness ideal and the impact of weight stigma, contemporary body ideals have evolved to place increasing emphasis on muscularity. Consequently, individuals whose bodies deviate from socially promoted muscular ideals may encounter distinct forms of stigma. Emerging research highlights that muscularity-related stereotypes and stigma may uniquely contribute to body dissatisfaction, muscle dysmorphia, and muscularity-oriented eating disorder psychopathology. This webinar will explore how muscularity stigma may contribute to body dissatisfaction, muscle dysmorphia, and muscularity-oriented eating disorder psychopathology. In addition, the webinar will present a newly developed Experienced Low Muscularity Stigma Scale (ELMSS) as a measurement tool for assessing perceived stigma related to insufficient muscularity. The discussion will also address cross-cultural perspectives, measurement issues, and clinical implications for prevention and intervention.
