Why San Antonio?
The AED Board of Directors chose the city of San Antonio as the site for ICED 2025 after much thoughtful consideration. It became a possibility when our Events Management Team discovered a recently renovated hotel providing the precisely the type of conference space that ICED requires, and for a very good price. While Board members were excited at the opportunity, there was much concern for the comfort and safety of our attendees considering the political climate in the state of Texas. Our Events Management Team visited the city and met with not only the hotel team, but also members of Visit San Antonio, the San Antonio LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce. We also sought input from AED Past President Carolyn Becker, a resident of San Antonio.

u For years, the City of San Antonio has consistently achieved a perfect score of 100 (out of 100) on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index, recognizing the city’s nondiscrimination laws, municipal services and leadership on LGBTQ+ equality. This underscores San Antonio’s progress toward social change and breaking down barriers to ensure equal opportunities for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability or socioeconomic background.
u Despite the recent state and country-level legislative actions, San Antonio shines as a city where unity and diversity coexist harmoniously. It celebrates diversity as a strength, and unity as a guide, creating a unique cityscape where everyone feels at home. San Antonio, stands united for women’s rights, immigration and social justice protests. It honors Black heritage with the country’s largest Martin Luther King Day March. It celebrates proudly with the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride river parade and Diwali festivals.
u San Antonio’s commitment to fostering an environment where everyone belongs and feels respected, valued, and unafraid to contribute to the community is reflected in the policies and initiatives undertaken by its city government. The San Antonio City Council passed dozens of resolutions supporting women’s rights, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community.
u San Antonio’s leadership understand that diversity and inclusion require unwavering effort and support, and as challenges arise, they must be addressed to prevent deterrents to progress. Despite systemic barriers thrust upon San Antonio by state and federal governments, involvement from groups across the country and world speaks volumes, and city leadership believe this will ripple positively across the state. Together, we can lift our voices to ensure the city stays fighting for what is right and protect the strength within our community that makes San Antonio the Texas city welcoming to all.
