DUKE CENTER FOR EATING DISORDERS
DUKE UNIVERSITY, DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA
Position: The Duke Center for Eating Disorders (Nancy Zucker, Director) is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship involving 2/3-3/4 clinical practice with children, adolescents, and adults diagnosed with a DSM-5 eating disorder and individuals with problems secondary to medical conditions. Remaining effort will be devoted to research (this balance is negotiable). The Postdoctoral Fellowship is a one- to two-year position with a start date on or around August/September 1, 2019. Clinical responsibilities will include participating in an interdisciplinary, team-based treatment program at the Duke Center for Eating Disorders that is dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to individuals with eating disorders (young childhood through late adulthood) and their families and supervising clinical psychology graduate students in training. Clinical formats include individual, group, and family-based treatments; diagnostic and preferably neuropsychological assessment experience, and prior training in empirically-validated behavioral (and ideally) somatic-focused treatments. Examples include cognitive behavior therapy, family-based treatments for adolescent eating disorder, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and interpersonal therapy. While our team contains an eclectic mix of training orientations (e.g. behavioral, psychodynamic, family systems), we all share a commitment to developing and implementing novel interventions for those with eating disorders routed in neurobiology and learning theory. Our team is composed of clinical psychologists, masters level clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, occupational therapists, nutritionists, and physicians with specialties in pediatrics and adolescent medicine.
Thus, the ideal individual is passionate about providing state-of-the-art care for individuals with eating disorders, would be thrilled to be part of team vested in creating innovative and theoretically informed interventions, loves learning, and is not intimidated by feedback. While the majority of individuals on our team are active researchers and interested in research, this is not a requirement but a bonus. There will be opportunities to participate in research including writing manuscripts, etc., with the degree of involvement is up to the individual.
Setting:The Duke Center for Eating Disorders is housed in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the Duke University School of Medicine. We are an outpatient program with innovative models of treatment delivery and see approximately 2-4 new patients per week. Our practice is co-located with the Duke Center for Autism, the Duke ADHD Program, Anxiety Program, and Adolescent Depression Program allowing us to collaborate easily in terms of both research and clinical management.
Duke University offers a rich intellectual and scientific environment facilitated by several institutes, including the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and the Duke Clinical Research Institute, which are designed to promote interdisciplinary research. Translational research is facilitated through frequent seminars, retreats, and workshops supported by the university that are designed for both clinical researchers and those conducting preclinical studies.
Primary Activities:This postdoctoral training experience will include participating in team-based clinical activities focused on children with a range of eating and body perception disturbances. The fellow will spend full time involved in clinical activities, which will include participation in psychological and interdisciplinary evaluations and intervention with children presenting with a wide array of challenges, with the majority of clinical work focused on eating disorders. The fellow will also supervise clinical psychology graduate-level practicum students.
Qualifications:Applicants must have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or related field from an APA-accredited doctoral program. Clinical experience with children and adults with eating disorders is required.
Application:Applicants for the position should send the following:
