AED Journal Watch: Call for Editorial Staff

The Academy for Eating Disorders is calling for volunteer editorial staff for the new AED Journal Watch.  This will be a monthly publication, to start in September 2026 (with some possible orientation work in July 2026), that will review the 12 most important peer-reviewed papers published each month, relevant to the eating disorders community.  The journal watch will cover papers published in any journal grouped into the following proposed categories:
    • Psychiatry
    • Epidemiology
    • Social Work & Psychology
    • Medicine & Nursing
    • Nutrition
    • Advocacy & Public Health

    Structure/Process:
Papers reviewed will not be limited to only research studies or trials, but could also include well-conducted meta-analyses, clinical outcomes studies, salient editorials, clinical reviews, or new commentaries/guidelines/innovations in care.  The goal is to help all members of the larger eating disorder community stay current in their understanding of recent advances in the field and how they may practically apply to clinical practice.
The editorial staff will be tasked with writing structured 500-word reviews of these papers, as well as keeping track of their assigned content domain's recent publications over the past 60 days.  We aim to have 15 staff members; each will be assigned approximately 9-11 reviews/year in their assigned content domains.  Those assigned fewer reviews may help the Editor-in-Chief with content layout, the 'research corner' (a small section dedicated to giving tips on how to read the literature), or CE/CME questions if we are successful in getting sponsorship for these.  This is a new venture and the responsibilities could evolve over time as the publication evolves.
For each paper the following outline will be utilized (approximately 500 words):
    What is this paper about?
    What population is reported on?
How was it conducted/outline the methods?
    What are its strengths?
    What are its limitations/biases?
How does it impact the eating disorder field?
    Staff:
The inaugural Editor-in-Chief will be Dr. Nicole Cifra at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia/The University of Pennsylvania.  The goal of this publication is to provide accurate and thoughtful 'science translation' to the broader field.  Therefore staff members need to have the following qualifications:
    • Ability to commit to a 1-year term with a possible renewal option
    • Excellent critical thinking and editorial skills to be able to read, analyze, and 'translate' the literature to a more general audience.
    • Some experience in the research-practice interface preferred – prior editorial or investigator experience not required.
    • Outstanding organizational skills and timeliness in meeting deadlines
    • Must also be AED members in good standing for at least 2 years
