APA Accredited Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Child Psychology
The University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry and Postdoctoral Training Network welcomes applications for a two-year APA-accredited postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Child Psychology. The program offers a research mentorship model. This year, opportunities are available for up to three fellows with expertise in the following areas: (1) anxiety, OCD and eating disorders (joint research opportunity across Child OCD and Anxiety Disorders Program and Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program), (2) perinatal, infant and early childhood mental health (Zero to Thrive), or (3) youth depression and suicide prevention (YDSP). In addition to focused research mentorship, the program provides evidence-based clinical training and a core curriculum. Our fellowship focuses on building knowledge and skills that help prepare fellows for a career as a scientist-practitioner. Clinical training occurs in a variety of specialty child psychiatry outpatient clinics (e.g., Trauma and Grief, Infant and Early Childhood, Parent Management Training, OCD and Anxiety, etc.) and may be supplemented with an optional short eating disorders rotation. Learn more about the research mentorships available this year:
1. Anxiety/OCD and Eating Disorders. The clinical child fellowship plans to recruit up to one postdoctoral candidate with expertise and interest in the treatment and research of childhood anxiety, OCD and/or eating disorders. This research placement will be a collaboration with Dr. Emily Bilek, lead psychologist of the Child OCD and Anxiety Disorders Program and Dr. Jessica Van Huysse, lead psychologist of the Comprehensive Eating Disorders Program. Specific research opportunities may include, analyzing and writing up neuroimaging and clinical data from pediatric OCD and Anxiety intervention research, supporting research examining augmentations to exposure therapy for youth, developing and/or supporting quality improvement research for eating disorders among youth.
2. Perinatal, Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health. The clinical child fellowship plans to recruit up to one postdoctoral candidate with expertise and interest in supporting early relationships between parents and their infant and toddlers, in the context of parent mental health challenges, and family experiences of stress, trauma, and/or adversity. This fellow would be mentored in the Zero to Thrive lab. Specific research opportunities may include opportunities to evaluate and support statewide infant mental health (IMH) initiatives, evaluation of relational health promotion within integrated perinatal healthcare settings, and/or quality improvement research for Strong Roots prevention/intervention programs.
3. Youth Depression and Suicide Prevention. The clinical child fellowship plans to recruit up to one postdoctoral candidate with expertise and interest in research relating to youth depression and prevention of youth suicide. This fellow would be mentored in the YDSP lab. Specific research opportunities may include involvement in an intervention development study for psychiatrically hospitalized youth as well as initiatives focused on studying the effectiveness of a system of care for Black youth at risk for suicide. Additional opportunities may include secondary analyses and manuscript writing based on ecological momentary data studying short-term risk as well as data stemming from large-scale ED-based studies.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA or CPA accredited program by August 2023. The start date of the fellowship is September 1, 2023. The stipend is currently $54,840 for 1st year fellows. Benefits include vacation, sick and professional development time, and health care coverage. Application Process
Deadline for applications is Wednesday, December 1, 2022. Candidate interviews typically take place in January. Interviews will be completed virtually for this training year. After a review of applications, individuals will be contacted for interview. The program plans to adhere to the Common Hold Date (CHD; February 27, 2023).
In addition to the application form available on the above webpage, please submit the following. Electronic submission* is preferred.
1) A copy of your Curriculum Vitae.
2) Three letters of recommendation, including one from your Graduate Program's Director of Clinical Training (attesting to your readiness for graduation), one from a primary clinical supervisor, and one from someone who can address your preparation for advanced training in clinical child psychology.
3) A graduate school transcript (unofficial is acceptable at this point).
4) A detailed cover letter describing, (1) your background in Clinical Psychology; (2) your training goals for postdoctoral fellowship; (3) your future career objectives; (4) your clinical and research training experiences; and (5) your commitment and experiences with diverse populations.
