Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy for Eating Disorders with Binge Eating

Description

This 8-hour didactic course will be taught by Stephen Wonderlich, Ph.D., Sanford Center for Biobehavioral Research and Carol Peterson, Ph.D., Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Minnesota on May 15-16, 2024 from noon-4pm ET via Zoom.

ICAT is a short term, structured treatment for eating disorders with binge eating components. It has been studied in a series of pilot studies and two randomized controlled trials which assessed its efficacy in treating individuals with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. These studies indicate that ICAT is an efficacious treatment for such eating disorders. ICAT is based on a theoretical model which suggests that various interpersonal and intrapersonal factors precipitate periods of significant emotional distress which in turn elicit eating disorder behaviors. The model emphasizes the importance of momentary states of emotion dysregulation in the maintenance of eating disorders. ICAT training will take place in two different components. The first is an intensive eight-hour training workshop which will take place over two consecutive half days. Following the workshop, participants will have the option of taking part in a six-month Learning Collaborative. In the Learning Collaborative, participants will meet every other week for an hour with other clinicians from the seminar and the developers of ICAT. This component is provided to enhance learning clinical techniques utilizing ICAT.

Learning objectives:

  1. Participants will become familiar with theoretical background underlying Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy. This will include concepts from models addressing emotion, interpersonal relationships and self-concept.
  2. Participants will become familiar with the fundamental structure, approach and clinical techniques associated with Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy. This will be facilitated through a number of clinical case examples as well as breakout discussion sessions.
  3. Participants will be introduced to the empirical support for Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy for both the treatment of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
  4. Participants who sign up for the Learning Collaborative will work with the developers of Integrative Cognitive-Affective Therapy for six months of consultation on clinical cases (after the two-day workshop) to enhance ICAT skill acquisition.

ADD-ON OPTION: Participate in the ICAT Learning Collaborative (Registration Limited)

Following the didactic course, our course presenters will host a 12-sesion ICAT Learning Collaborative (meeting every other week for 6 months). Learning Collaborative participants will have the opportunity to receive consultation on ongoing clinical cases (i.e. patients who are receiving ICAT) and to ask questions of the presenters and other attendees. To deepen their learning, Learning Collaborative participants will submit brief consultation reports to the Learning Collaborative team, including an update on therapy adherence, patient progress, and future treatment plan. The Learning Collaborative is a special opportunity for licensed professionals from any country who have a clear plan for putting ICAT into immediate practice. Certificates of completion will be issued at the conclusion of the Learning Collaborative for those who attend >80% of the sessions and participate actively with case presentations.

Audience
Licensed professionals from any country who have a clear plan for putting ICAT into immediate practice.

Prerequisites
To ensure all learners start on the same page, attending the didactic workshop is a pre-requisite for participation. AED learning collaboratives are considered educational consultation and explicitly not supervision.  Our consultants provide educational opinions on cases. Clinician’s institutions do the billing and use their own (or their institution’s) malpractice insurance.  Thus, all participants in the learning collaborative must be licensed clinicians with active malpractice insurance. Unlicensed trainee therapists will be considered on a case-by-case basis if the trainee is working under the license and malpractice insurance of an outside supervisor who accepts liability for the trainee’s cases.

Date/Time
12 sessions meeting every other week for 6 months. Meetings will take place at one of the following times: Wednesdays 2-3pm ET or Thursdays noon-1pm ET. Prospective participants will have the opportunity to indicate their preference when completing the application.

Application Process

To preserve the individual attention provided in the Learning Collaborative, attendance will be limited to 12 participants each. Applications will be reviewed and those eligible to participate in the course will be sent information to register on a first-come, first-served basis. Depending on the number of applications received, AED may offer more than one ICAT Learning Collaborative to accommodate all interested candidates who meet the criteria of being licensed professionals with the intention to put the therapy into immediate practice.
