Description:

This presentation provides a brief, clinically focused overview of psychedelics and their emerging relevance to eating disorder treatment. Proposed mechanisms, including effects on cognitive rigidity, self-concept, and emotional processing, will be reviewed alongside a high-level summary of the current evidence. Practical considerations such as safety risks, patient selection, developmental issues, and how to respond to patient inquiries will be emphasized. The goal is to equip clinicians with a balanced, evidence-informed framework for discussing psychedelics in eating disorder care.

Dr. Barnhart is an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Program of the Department of Psychology at Suffolk University and Director of the Elevating Minoritized Backgrounds in Research on Appearance Concerns and Eating Disorders, or EMBRACED Lab. Dr. Barnhart's research program also establishes a global understanding of eating disorders through cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural partnerships, advancing the assessment, etiology, and intervention of eating disorders in all people. Dr. Barnhart has published over 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts, which are routinely featured in flagship eating disorders (e.g., International Journal of Eating Disorders, Journal of Eating Disorders) and body image (e.g., Body Image) journals.
