Bio

I am a member of the AED since January 2006 and I’ve been part of four Special Interest Groups: Body Image & Prevention, Medical Care, and Hispano Latin American Chapter. During these years, I got fully compromised to the AED, participating in most of the ICEDs. I’ve been an active member of the https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniela-gomez-aguirre-ma-ceds-3553ab2a/Latin American Chapter, which I am Actually President 2017-2019. My training in Eating Disorders began more than 15 years ago. I got my degree in Psychiatry at the University of Chile and I obtained a Master degree in Eating Disorders and Obesity, at Cadiz University in Spain. In 2002, I change my residence to Barcelona, Spain, to make a fellowship at the Bellvitge Hospital (Section of Eating Disorders). During that time, I did my training with the Director of the Unit of Eating Disorders, Dr. Vicente Turon and Fernando Fernández, Phd. Thanks to the generosity and willingness of them, as well as ongoing advice, I could make an interesting follow-up to the ways in which both, treat patients with Eating Disorders. I finish my learning stage at New York, in the Eating Disorders Presbiteryan Hospital, in 2004, as an intership, under the direction of Dr. Katherine Halmi and her team. Today, I am Associate Professor at the University of Chile, I teach Eating Disorders and Consultations Psychiatry for undergraduate and graduate students at the Medical School, and also Psychiatry Residents. Together with Dra. Rosa Behar, we constitute one of the leading groups in Chile in Eating Disorders and Women’s Mental Health. Now I spend most of my time in Clinical Practice and teaching Eating Disorders and part of them in research. My actual investigation (since 2015) is focused on the study of the neurosensorial integration in patient with eating disorder, and their interferences with the body image. I founded the Eating Disorders Unit for adults patients in Pontificia Iniversidad Catolica de Chile, and I worked as a clinical director from 2002 until 2009. In 2009, I founded Centro AIDA, the first private clinical treatment center for Eating Disorders in Chile and we initiated the work on prevention. Last year, I added to my private work, the building of the Eating Disorders Clinical and Research Unit at the Clinica Psiquiátrica Universitaria, Universidad de Chile. On the other hand, I am a member of the Executive Committee of the Chilean Society of Psychiatry and the Director of the Eating Disorders Group in these Society. This Group, with the Chilean Gouvernement, leadership the building of National Eating Disorders Guidelines for Chile, in 2017. Currently I have an active task in leading research activities and training young researchers. Under my direction, three graduate students have already obtained their Master degree. These two possibilities for work sharing with anothers colleagues is very rewarding as I could work on the adaptation and validation of questionnaires with our population. With a few colleagues from my country, members of the AED and /or the Hispano Latin American Chapter, we founded the Chilean Association for the Study of Eating Disorders. With the model of the AED in mind, we will try to reunite researchers and clinicians from different spaces and institutions, we intend to multiply and institutionalize the present informal dialogues and connections among specialists in the country, from an interdisciplinary perspective, aiming at improvement of early detection, treatment, prevention and research of eating disorders as well as the development and support of health promotion regarding eating behavior, body and self-image. We expect to potentiate the participation of Chilean professionals within the AED and the HLA Chapter, to coordinate clinical and research activities associated with eating disorders, to provide information on the treatment and prevention of EDs to those who work in the fields of health and education and to encourage research in the field of eating disorders and support national and international collaborations. I have a strong vocation to engage more actively with the Academy for Eating Disorders, participate in scientific exchange with my colleagues around the world and share information and data relevant to the Eating Disorders in Chile.
